the pink apartments, originally uploaded by judywatt.

An LJ friend just got me to thinking about how many places I have lived since I made my escape from LA to SF in 1970 at the tender age of 18.

I came up with 18 places. Three of the moves were into and out of and within the same apartment building on Henry Street with different partners, but that's still moving. Only 4 places in the past 22 years, so 14 places were in the first 18 years.

And still I have so much stuff to get rid of! One would think I'd have it down to a science, but no, clutter always stakes its claim, especially when you move from a large flat to a much smaller one like the last time.

As much as I want to move again in the next year or two, I dread the whole process. We have made some progress gettting rid of stuff, but still have a lot more to sort through and have carted off or cart off ourselves somehow.

Rachel is going through the same process in the flat she's lived in for about 15 years - getting rid of all the junk other people have left behind for her to deal with, plus junk of her own.

It seems like it has no end for either of us, but I tell myself that yes, one of these days, we will all move all our stuff worth keeping to some other place and then clutter can start staking its claim there too.

Having moved into my boyfriend's place last year, after him being here 6 - 7 years by himself, he has collected quite a trove of clutter, that I am not slowly sorting out. It's hard because none of it's mine and I have to pile it all up and make him look through it all. One day though, we will have closet space again!
