reminder to self -
don't ride muni on free days
EVER again
and keep avoiding it as much as possible
the rest of the time too.
in other news -
seeing the dalai lama yesterday was great.
he doesn't have to ride muni, lucky for him.
some nut job in the audience threw an apple at him though
when he came on stage
and called him an asshole.
security removed the crazy person immediately of course
and none of it seemed to bother his holiness one bit.
but still, i would have liked to have had his holiness on muni with me today.

shouting match broke out on #1 california bus i was on today
between middle-aged black "gentleman"
and a 75 year old chinese woman sitting by the front door
in the seats where elderly and disabled passengers have preference.
black man was a friend of the driver - i've seen him before on this bus line.
he wanted to sit where the elderly woman was sitting
because he always sits there where he can talk to the driver the whole time
even though drivers are not supposed to talk with passengers like that.
driver is also middle-aged black man.
not that this really matters, just giving the facts.
so the elderly chinese lady doesn't move.
black man starts yelling obscenities at her
and this escalates because she is not going to take any crap from him.
he calls her various names and tells her to shut her ugly mouth.
she responds in kind and i have to admit,
i was impressed with her toughness -
being a tiny old chinese woman being yelled at by a large black man.
the driver does nothing - in fact i can see him smirking because i can see his face
in the rear view mirror from where i was sitting.
yelling continues and gets worse between the large black man
and the little old chinese woman
and the driver just keeps smirking.
finally a white guy in back of the bus yells at the driver
to please stop the shouting match between his friend
and the little old chinese woman.
none of the zillion chinese people on the bus
say anything to come to her aid
or to get the driver to stop the shouting match.
just saying.
anyway, the white guy yelling at them
makes the black guy start yelling at him back
telling him to mind his own business, fuck off, etc.
and then that starts escalating as well of course.
at this point i ring the bell and get off the bus
because i can't stand it anymore.
i'd only been on the bus about ten minutes at that point.
i was curious to see how it ended,
but had an irresistable urge to get off
and walk (or limp as the case may be)
the rest of the way.
i wanted to write down the number of the bus so i could call muni
and complain about the driver, buy i couldn't find a pen in my bag
and then i forgot the bus number as i was looking for a pen.
this is all just one example of why i hate to use muni anymore.
half the drivers are like that, when they bother to show up for work.
and too many passengers are like the guy who was trying to intimidate
the old chinese lady and the other passengers as well.
thinking he could get away with it because he was buds with the driver
and apparently he was right.
people like that make me want to throw up.
and it makes me think
if we humans can't even get along
on the most simple level -
riding a bloody bus without starting a fight
then how are we ever going to stop killing each other
over politics and religion and money?
