From one of the financial blogs I read off and on -

>>I had the pleasure of visiting Cancun a few years back and ran into a man who had ex-patriated there.  He made less than half the amount of money that I did but lived an entirely different lifestyle.  He had:

  • A full time nanny/cook for his kids
  • A full time driver for his wife and kids
  • A full time cleaning person
  • A part time gardner for his garden
  • All their clothes was sent out to be laundered
  • His children all went to private schools
  • His wife didn't work and spent her days shopping.

How much did this guy make?  About 50k/year.>>

... which is why I keep thinking about Mexico as a place we might retire to.  Not Cancun,  because I hate tropical weather, but at least the above indicates that even in a more expensive area of Mexico like that, one can live very well on 50k a year, which would be about the same situation in San Miguel (it's expensive for Mexico but cheap compared to anywhere in the US that I would want to live).

And we won't need a nanny or a cook or a full time cleaning person, etc.  And we will have more than 50k per year in pension and social security income.  When we were in SMA I asked people how well one could live there on  50 or 60K per year and they all said very well.

Oh well, maybe it's time to learn more Spanish than just how to say "more drinks please" and "bring the check" and "how much is that?".

Or else there is Puerto Rico or the US Virgin Islands... but they are too tropical for me.

Actually I deleted the ranty part, hehe.

It was just more blah blah blah about the handbasket to hell we seem to be stuck in and all that.

i know, i took spanish in high school and got a's in it, but that was eons ago and i never used it so i have to start over. my husband speaks it pretty well though.

a friend of ours may be moved to milan in the fall! if she does, i will definitely go spend some time in italy with her and see how much 50 or 60k a year will buy there too :)
