Good news for Californians

Even though gas prices are highest in CA, Californians only spend 2 to 5 percent of their income on gas.

In southern states and in the Midwest, people on average spend 10 to 15 percent of their income on gas, though gas prices are lower in those areas.

It's not because people in CA drive less either (LOL) - it  is because people in those areas have much lower incomes overall than people in CA have.

My source for this info is the local news, as they were showing government graphs of the data on how much of their income people spend on gas.

And that is the long and short of it when people ask "how can people afford to live in CA?"

It's all relative, as in, where it's cheap to live, incomes tend to be a lot lower as well - but unfortunately, in the cheap areas, gas is not THAT much cheaper, so people end up spending five times as much of their income for gas.

God I love CA, and especially SF, which is one of the few areas in CA that you don't really need a car, and even if you have one, you don't have to drive it very much. :)
